Worker killed in Eastpointe trench collapse identified as 45-year-old husband, father

EASTPOINTE, Mich. (WXYZ) — A Department of Public Works employee who died late Wednesday in a trench collapse in Eastpointe has been identified as Brian Theobald, 45, the city's manager said in a statement released Thursday.

Theobald was an employee with the Department of Public Works for 13 years. He died while repairing a water main break in the area when the trench collapsed and subsequently trapped and killed him.

First responders worked to free Theobald and he was taken to a local hospital for life-saving treatment. He later died from his injuries.

He's survived by his wife and two children.
