BY ROBERT BURNS, AP — Space Force became the first new military service in the U.S. in more than 70 years.
President Donald Trump signed it into law Friday as part of the 2020 national defense bill.
In its first year it will likely have only about 200 people and a budget of $40 million.
Trump said America’s superiority in space is “absolutely vital.”
The military sees it as an affirmation of the need to more effectively organize for the defense of U.S. interests in space.
The Pentagon has said China and Russia have embarked on major efforts to develop technology that could allow them to disrupt U.S. satellites.
