COLDWATER TOWNSHIP. MICH. — A routine flying lesson turned terrifying when the plane crashed Saturday afternoon at the Branch County Regional Airport.

Flight instructor Ediwin Shumway was simulating a "power failure" with pilots Patrick Murphy and Richard Crepas when the plane started to shake. They were 300 feet in the air when they began to drop.

Shumay told responders he and Murphy tried to pull up - "Pulled as hard as we could", according to the report. The plane hit the ground and slid on it's belly for about 250 yards tearing one of the fuel tanks.

Shumay, Murphy, and Crepas sustained only minor scrapes in the crash.

The FAA was contacted and has begun an investigation into the crash
