CASS COUNTY, Mich. — A teenager received a trip to the hospital after the vehicle he was driving struck a tree Saturday night.

At 9:50 p.m. Saturday, the Cass County Sheriff's Department responded to a report of a traffic crash with injuries near the 57000 block of Patterson Hill Road in Newberg Township. The investigation revealed that Michael Schlup, 19, of Dowagiac was turning into a driveway when his vehicle hit a tree.

The teen was transported to Borgess Lee Hospital in Dowagiac where no condition report was available Sunday.

Deputies said drugs or medical reasons may have been factors in the crash. They did not know if Schlup was wearing a seat belt.

The Newberg Township Fire and Ambulance assisted at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by the Cass County Sheriff's Department.
