MICHIGAN — Keep Michigan clean, that’s the message being shared by Eco-friendly Michiganders, doing their part in a social media challenge to keep our state beautiful.

Michigan Overboard is hosting a viral social media challenge to grab a trash bag and clean up your favorite park, beach, or trail head. Joining the movement is simple. First, pick up trash. Second, post your efforts to social media with the #overboardcleanup. Lastly, celebrate and wait for your name to be announced online for cool prizes. The grand prize will be announced on Monday.

“We’ve got 22 million pounds of plastic entering the Great Lakes every year,” said Jeff Cremonte, Michigan Overboard’s founder.

Cremonte told Fox 17 recent pictures of unkempt waters and littered beaches pushed the company to kick-start the cleanup campaign, now working with photographers and Michigan based non-profits to keep Michigan pure.

“We’ve been out using the lakes, rivers and streams all summer long… so let’s all take a week now to clean up after ourselves,” Cremonte said.

Donations are also being accepted online, with proceeds going to non-profits focusing their efforts to keep our natural resources clean.

“It's really our obligation to help protect our natural wonders we've been gifted with,” said Cremonte.
