ZEELAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. — One person is in custody Tuesday night after a police chase in Zeeland Township.
An Ottawa County sheriff's deputy saw a dark-colored Toyota Camry weaving in and out of traffic and traveling fast at about 4:40 p.m. on westbound I-196 near the 59 MM, a news release said.
The deputy tried to stop the driver as they exited at Byron Road, but they refused to stop and kept going westbound on Business I-196.
The driver stayed at or below speed limit at this point, police said.
However, the driver intentionally hit the sheriff’s patrol car, as well as two assisting patrol cars from the Zeeland Police Department, as they approached 96th Avenue.
Another patrol car was hit near Lakewood Boulevard and Beeline before the driver lost control of their vehicle and ran off the road, hitting a building.
Police took the driver into custody without any further incident.
No one was injured.
The driver is being held at the Ottawa County Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding, felonious assault on a police officer, operating while intoxicated and several other charge.
Ottawa County police continue to investigate.
