KENT COUNTY, Mich. — The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is issuing a warning regarding phone scams claiming to be law enforcement.
Police say these scams threaten to arrest or harm those who answer the call, physically or financially, if money is not forwarded to the scammers. Scammers may also disguise their numbers to resemble a genuine police department.
The KCSO wants to remind everyone that the police will never ask for money or gift cards. To protect yourself from scams, be cautious of unfamiliar phone numbers, and do not provide personal information such as your social security number or banking credentials. Furthermore, police advise not to send money to anyone you don’t know personally and to hang up the phone when in doubt.
