ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A Kent County deputy was hospitalized and another driver was killed following a head-on crash Thursday evening.
The call for the crash came in at 6:05 p.m. in the area of Fruit Ridge Avenue and Stage Road.
Officials on scene tell FOX 17 a tow truck was slowing down to make a turn and the car behind couldn't stop and lost control on the slippy roads. That driver then ended up in the other lane where they collided with the deputy's cruiser.
The driver, a 40-year-old Brandon Vandersloot of Walker, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries where he later died.
At this time, it's unclear how severely hurt the deputy was.
Officials tell FOX 17 the deputy had been responding to a call for a separate crash when they were hit. That deputy has been with the department for about two years.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr. Vandersloot’s family”, said Sheriff Michelle Lajoye-Young. “We are proud of our deputy’s resolve. Even after being involved in a head on crash, she was able to get out of her vehicle and started to render aid to the other driver.”
The crash remains under investigation.
