GRAND RAPIDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Westbound I-96 was closed at Cascade Road Monday morning after a car drove into the rear end of a trailer being hauled by a truck.

The crash happened before 8 a.m. on June 20. Michigan State Police say the truck slowed down because of heavy traffic and a lane closure further up the freeway.

First responders extricated the driver of the car. The 60-year-old man from Comstock Park suffered serious injuries and is in the hospital in stable condition.

The driver of the truck was not hurt.

Police say alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.

All traffic was diverted off of westbound I-96 to Cascade Road. The highway was reopened around 10:10 a.m.
