GAINES TOWNSHIP, Mich. — Authorities are investigating after a man's body was found in an icy pond in Kent County.
The Kent County Sheriff’s Office says the body was reported by a person passing by the area near Kalamazoo Avenue and M-6 near the Crossing Apartments in Gaines Township.
Authorities identified the victim as 60-year-old Terrence Hartfield of Grand Rapids and said he was likely walking across the ice, fell into the water and couldn't get out.
Authorities say it appears his body had been there for a while.
Crews had to wait several hours for water rescue equipment to arrive to get his body out of the water, as the ice was too thin to support anyone.
Deputies say there are no signs of foul play.
