GRAND RAPIDS, Mich — Guiding Light hosts its own kind of party during the most-watched TV event of the year.
The event featured all the Super Bowl classics; good music, fun, friends, and family gathered around the TV to watch football's biggest night without alcohol.
This is the second year for the event held by Guiding Light Ministries, and organizers tell FOX 17 it's important to have this option.
“If you’re in recovery, you don’t want to go back into your old neighborhood and the same people you’ve been hanging out with," Starla McDermott, Development Director of Guiding Light said. "... it tends to make you fall back into those routines."
The recovery facility said this year there were 150 people on the guest-list, including many currently in rehab at Guiding Light. Some in the recovery community bringing their sponsors to share in the fun.
“It means a lot, he’s helped me through a lot this past nine months." Derek Amshey said of having sponsors at the party. "I’ve been able to go to him any time these past nine months. If I’ve had a bad day, he’s been there through everything,”
The event also served as a private fundraiser for the ministry. You can find out more about Guiding Light and their ministries here.
