GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — A local nonprofit plans to walk across the state to raise money for firefighters battling cancer.

Neighbors United will hold its second-annual #WalkForTheRed140 fundraiser Sept. 24-27 with a goal of raising $50,000, a news release said.

That money will help 14 firefighters.

Founder Joe Warne, who is also a firefighter, will walk about 140 miles from Macomb Township to the Grand Rapids area.

He says he decided to make it an annual fundraiser after learning his captain has the disease.

In addition, he says he met a 35-year veteran firefighter while giving out checks who “had no heat or stove” and another “that could not afford gas to get to his chemo treatments.”

Warne will be joined on his walk by other members of the nonprofit’s team, fellow firefighters and community volunteers.

Neighbors United has already raised $11,300 toward the walk through bottle drives. Donations can be made on their Facebook page or at www.wedontjudge.org.
