GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Dr. Richard Samuel Piazza, D.O., has been sentenced to 71 months behind bars for writing up illegal opioid prescriptions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Western District of Michigan.
Judge Janet T. Neff, who handed down the sentence, also sentenced Piazza to three years of supervised release, according to the national attorney’s office.
“Dr. Piazza stands convicted of the same offenses we charge against street corner drug dealers,” says U.S. Attorney Andrew Birge. “Those who feed the opioid crisis by writing prescriptions for no legitimate medical purpose deserve to be treated this way under the law.”
We’re told Piazza pleaded guilty in Sept. 2020.
