Driver critically injured after crash splits car on Grand Rapids' SE side

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — One person is hospitalized after a crash that caused a car to split in half.

It happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday on Lafayette Avenue between Fulton and Washington Streets on Grand Rapids Southeast side.

Police tell FOX 17 the driver was driving at a high rate of speed and hit a tree, causing the car to split in half.

A Grand Rapids police officer on scene originally told FOX 17 there were no major injuries but now police say the 20-year-old driver is in critical condition.

It is not clear if drugs or alcohol were a factor.
