GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — We spoke with Roger Morgenstrern from Consumers Energy about some tips to prepare for power outages during the oncoming storm.

There are already a number of outages due to the heavy rain, but he says they will only increase with freezing rainfall.

When you see up to half an inch of snow on a power line, it is almost like having 500 pounds of extra weight on it.

Stay away at least 25 ft. away from from icy or downed power lines and report them instead immediately to 9-1-1 and Consumers Energy.

He says the ice storm of 2019 saw more than 200,000 outages, although it is difficult to predict from storm to storm.

Run generators outside, not in your basement or garage, and get an extra extension cord to make sure it is more than 25 ft away from your house.
