Two people identified as charged in Grand Rapids riot

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The identity of two persons charged in connection with riots in downtown Grand Rapids have been released.

Clare Anwyn Newhall, 21, was charged with one count of riot and one count of malicious destruction of a building. The charges are connected to activity around the Secretary of State office on Division Avenue at Fulton Street in downtown Grand Rapids.The riot charge is a 10-year felony; the MDOB charge is a 93-day misdemeanor.

Newhall has not been arraigned to date.

Byron Leonel Castaneda, 21, is charged in connection with activity at the F. David Barney store in downtown Grand Rapids. He is charged with riot, breaking and entering a building with intent to commit larceny, and lying to police during violent crime investigation.
