GRAND HAVEN, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is re-opening Grand Haven State Park's Channel parking lot on Friday, May 22.

The re-opening of the Channel lot, also known as Fisherman's Park, will take place at 8 a.m. Friday and is contingent on visitors following COVID-19 guidelines at all times.

Guidelines include-

  • Come to a state park only if you're feeling healthy.
  • Keep at least 6 feet between yourself and people from other households.
  • Bring your mask and hand sanitizer to parks. Portable toilets will be available.
  • If the parking lot is full when you attempt to visit, leave and choose a different nearby location.

The DNR also stresses that this is already a busy holiday weekend, and they are expecting warm weather, so be patient and stay away from other groups of people.

Parks and Recreation Chief Ron Olson says these guidelines will be enforced. "We're going to make every effort possible. We have signs up to remind people. We also are going to make periodic announcements where possible to keep reminding people to do their part to be responsible. If everybody does their part and takes care of their own business, their things will be fine."

If visitors do not follow these social distancing guidelines, the DNR says they will have to close the Channel parking lot again.

The Channel parking lot is different from the main beach parking lot, which will remain closed until sand relocation work has been completed.
