Senate race breakdown: Does John James have a chance?

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — As the race for U.S. Senate takes shape, Fox 17 is using their their Realtime Map to forecast what's to come November 3.

Gary Peters is up for reelection, John James is going head-to-head with the incumbent, ready for another bout after losing to Debbie Stabenow in 2018. As of news time, polling averages available on Fivethirtyeight.com gave Peters an 82-percent chance to retain his seat. Where individual polls in just the last two-days show Peters leading anywhere from 4-9 percentage points.

Republicans currently hold the balance of power in the U.S. Senate, with a 53-47 edge. They've held that power since 2015. 12 Democratic seats and 23 republican seats are up for reelection. Even though Republicans hold the majority, Democrats have fewer seats to hold and only need four seats to gain control.
