MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — A Central Michigan University professor says the audience was the main loser of the first presidential debate Tuesday night.

Both President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden were playing to their hard base throughout the night, said David Rutledge, an assistant professor of political science.

“You could see this play out when they were talking about law and order,” Rutledge said. “[…] He kept saying law and order because those are key words for Biden’s party.”

The candidates knew who they were after and tried to get each other off their game, often talking over each other.
