Michigan's Secretary of State branches are offering special in-person appointments with extended hours for those who need license and ID renewals by Sept. 30.

This is available to residents whose driver's licenses or state ID cards expire between Jan. 1, 2020 and Sept. 30, 2020.

"These special appointments are another tool helping us to ensure continued service to Michigan residents during the COVID-19 pandemic,” Benson said. “Since June 1, when our branches reopened for appointments, we’ve completed more than 3 million transactions at branches, online, through self-service stations and by mail to serve the people of Michigan.”

Starting Aug. 20, customers can make appointments between 4 and 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. Appointments will happen between Aug. 24 and Sept. 30. To make an appointment online, click here or call 888-SOS-MICH (767-6424).

The special appointments are strictly for renewing Michigan driver's licenses or state ID's that expire between Jan. 1, 2020, and Sept. 30, 2020. And is only for those who need to renew in-person. If you schedule an appointment that does not require an in-person visit, it will be canceled, according to SOS officials.

These special appointments can't be used for any other transaction and aren't transferable to another customer.
