NATIONAL — Director Dr. Ngozi Ezike of the Illinois Department of Public Health announced a child under 1 years old has died after contracting COVID-19.

“There has never before been a death associated with COVID-19 in an infant. A full investigation is underway to determine the cause of death,” said Dr. Ezike in a statement released saturday. “We must do everything we can to prevent the spread of this deadly virus. If not to protect ourselves, but to protect those around us.”

It is a stark reminder that people of all ages are susceptible to the virus, making steps taken to limit the spread all the more important.

Illinois is reporting 3,491 positive cases with 47 deaths while Michigan reached over 4,600 cases with 92 deaths as of early Saturday.
