Concerns grow as Michigan reported an increase in COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said the plan was to move the state into phase 5 of her MI Safe Start plan by July 4, but she may pump the brakes and said her decision will be based on data.

The uptick in virus cases has some doctors concerned, especially with more people going out, and not following social distancing or health guidelines. Doctors say we all have to do our part to prevent a potential spike in cases.

"People are not being as careful as they’re supposed to be," said Indira Brar, Sr. Staff Infectious Disease Doctor at Henry Ford.

On Wednesday, the state saw an increase of more than 300 cases – the highest amount of cases since June 3.

“I said my goal was to get the whole state to stage 5 by July 4, but it’s all going to be driven by the data,“ Whitmer said.

Doctors say with the recent increase in cases, they’re concerned that not enough people are following safe social distancing guidelines.

"Not be in crowded places, not be in closed bars and right next to each other and not wearing masks. That’s what they really need to be careful about," Dr. Brar said.

Recently, Harpers Restaurant and Brew Pub in East Lansing is where more than 30 people, after visiting the bar, tested positive for COVID-19.

The owners releasing a statement that reads in part, “We have closed temporarily, to implement added safety precautions. We are investing in new air filtration technology as well as a virtual Line management app.”

All the people diagnosed are between 18 and 23 years old.

"Our younger population shouldn’t become complacent, shouldn’t think they are invincible that they won't get infected," Dr. Brar said.

On our WXYZ Facebook page people responding to the uptick in cases and the governor not moving the state into phase 5 just yet.

One person writing: "Governor Whitmer is going to have to do what she has to do to keep the virus contained."

Another writing: "If people would just wear a mask and social distance, this wouldn't even have been discussed. Just do it people, keep the state open."

"Don’t go out and sit right next to 20 other people taking in each others faces because some people think if you’re not coughing and sneezing it’s OK. But talking," Dr. Brar said. "There is a lot of aerosolization. We are not invincible, but don’t be scared be careful."

Doctors fear if people don't do their part, we could see more cases reported.
