State reports 1,791 new cases of coronavirus

MICHIGAN — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 144,897.

The number of cases has increased 1,791 from yesterday, when there were 143,106 statewide cases, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.

The state says there have been 6,987 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 23 from yesterday, when there were 5,964 statewide deaths.

Statewide, 104,271 people have recovered from the virus as of Oct. 17. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 8,090,241 cases, and there have been 219,047 deaths — while 3,197,539 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
