DETROIT — Back in March, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan instituted policies that eliminated copays, deductibles, and coinsurance for COVID-19 treatments. BCBS has extended those benefits through December 31, 2020.
“Blue Cross wants our members in Michigan and across the nation to rest assured that, should they contract the COVID-19 disease, they won’t have to worry about the financial cost of fighting it,” said BCBSM president & CEO Daniel J. Loepp in a release.
The benefits apply to “members in fully insured commercial PPO and HMO plans, as well as individuals in fully insured Medicare Advantage plans,” according to the release.
What happens with self-insured companies has yet to be determined.
By the end of the year, BCBSM believes they will have spent an extra $150 million in coverage due to COVID-19.
