(WXYZ) — The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has launched the 'Mask Up, Mask Right' initiative to promote proper mask wearing throughout the state.

The MDHHS said masking right includes wearing three-layered washable cloth face coverings, medical-grade disposable masks or approved KN95 masks. The mask also has to be worn correctly, securely fitting over your mouth and nose, and with no gaps.

Michigan is following suit with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recommends the use of masks to protect the wearer and the people they're around.

"The science is now settled: Masks protect others from COVID – and they protect the wearer,” said Robert Gordon, MDHHS director, in a press release. “It’s important to wear the right mask and wear it the right way. We want all Michiganders to Mask Up, Mask Right as we continue to battle the virus in our state.”

If you are in need of a proper mask, the MDHHS said residents can pick one up from partner sites across the state.
