55,608 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 55,608.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 504 from yesterday, when there were 55,104 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 223 new cases.

The state says there have been 5,334 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 68 from yesterday, when there were 5,266 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 26 new deaths.

Statewide, 33,168 people have recovered from the virus as of May 22. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,691,342 cases, and there have been 99,724 deaths — while 384,902 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
