55,104 coronavirus cases confirmed in Michigan

LANSING, Mich. — The number of positive cases of the coronavirus in Michigan has increased to 55,104.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) released the latest numbers on the coronavirus outbreak this afternoon.

The number of cases has increased 223 from yesterday, when there were 54,881 statewide cases. Yesterday, the state reported 202 new cases.

The state says there have been 5,266 coronavirus deaths in Michigan.

The number of deaths has increased 26 from yesterday, when there were 5,240 statewide deaths. Yesterday, the state reported 12 new deaths.

Statewide, 33,168 people have recovered from the virus as of May 22. A person is considered "recovered" by the state if they are "30 days out from their onset of illness."

In the U.S., there are 1,672,714 cases, and there have been 98,636 deaths — while 379,157 people have recovered, according to the global COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
