American Legion Post 28 hosting annual Chili Cook Off on Feb. 8

On Saturday, February 8, the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post 28 Grand Haven is hosting their 19th annual Chili Cook Off, and it's going to be their hottest event of the year!

Contestants will compete for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in three categories: Spicy, Regular, and People's Choice.

There will also be raffle tickets available for $1 each for a chance to win some amazing prizes.

Doors open at noon, and the tasting starts at 3 p.m. Samples of chili cost $1 per bowl.

The event will take place at Legion Post 28, located at 700 S. Harbor Drive.

Attendees most be 21 or older.

If you can't make it to the event, here's a recipe on how to make an award-winning chili.

Ingredients:

1 lb of lean ground beef
1 tbsp canola oil
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 tbsp minced garlic
2 cups of water
2 tsp each of Worcestershire sauce, ground cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, and brown sugar
3 tbsp Ancho Chili powder (to taste)
2 cans of kidney beans
28 oz can of crushed tomatoes
6 oz can of tomato paste

Instructions:

1. Heat oil, brown ground beef
2. Add onion and garlic. Cook until onion is clear
3. Add all remaining ingredients except kidney beans
4. Lower heat to simmer
5. Simmer one-hour covered
6. Add kidney beans
7. Cook one-hour uncovered
