BROOKS TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A mother and her newborn were taken to the hospital after police say a trooper with Michigan State Police delivered the baby on the side of the road on Sunday.
It happened around 11:48 a.m. along Spruce Avenue south of M-82 in Brooks Township in Newaygo County.
Trooper Owen McGuigan was on patrol when he was dispatched to help someone experiencing a medical emergency in a red Jeep Cherokee, according to Michigan State Police. Police say due to a language barrier, it was only until he arrived on scene the trooper found out a 41-year-old woman was in labor.
The trooper reportedly barely had time to call for an ambulance and put gloves on before he delivered a healthy baby girl. Michigan State Police say a college intern, riding with the trooper also helped with the delivery of the baby.
The baby was born eight minutes after Trooper McGuigan was dispatched to the call.
