Women’s Fitness Day: The key to a long healthy life

September is known for Women's Health and Fitness Day, and is aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle for women across the country.

With the crazy summer over and the kids back in school, September is a great time to swing back into a routine of exercise and a healthy diet.

Dr. Diana Bitner, a nationally recognized women's health specialist from Spectrum Health, says at least 30 minutes of activity a day are the key to a healthy lifestyle.

Health and fitness are important, but it's different for everyone. It's important to set a health goal that is personal and meaningful, not everyone's idea of a good time is running a 5K or biking 10 miles.

Once a goal is set, make a plan to successfully reach that goal. It will be difficult to reach that goal if you don't find activities you enjoy, or a time or place that if most convenient to exercise.

As much as we don't want to admit it, as we age it gets harder to do the activities we once loved. By staying active, whether it's through vigorous exercise or just a daily walk, the best outcome is being able to do the activities you love and feeling good about your health.

Healthy meals and exercise don't just happen, schedule it as part of your busy daily routine. With constantly being active for at least 30 minutes a day, you can exercise like you're 20 years younger than your actual age.

Dr. Bitner's office is located at 3800 Lake Michigan Drive Northwest, Suite A. To schedule an appointment with her, call (616) 267-8225.
