Getting your heating unit ready for cold weather

The colder weather is here, which means it's time to start thinking about turning on the furnace.

Now is the time to make sure your home is being heated as efficiently and safely as possible, before the cold weather is in full swing. A preventive check up on your system can save you from bigger expenses and problems down the road.

Experts at West Michigan Heating and Air Conditioning says that even if you don't think there's a problem with your furnace or heating unit, you should have an expert come out and look at it just in case.

Possible problems with a heating unit can range from a carbon monoxide leak, to a problem with the gas unit, to minor fixes like changing out the air filter and making sure the blower is working.

Changing the air filter is something you can do without the help of an expert. The air filter has to be changed on a monthly or even yearly basis depending on the air flow and dust build up in the household.

During the heating season, if you let the filter get too dirty, the furnace will overheat causing crack and stress on the unit, leading to worse problems. You can tell if a filter needs changing by holding it up to the light; if you can't see light coming through the filter, it's time to switch it out.

If you schedule a preventive maintenance appointment, a typical tune up will take in between 30-45 minutes.

By keeping your furnace in good condition, your unit will be running more efficient, and save you money in the long run.
