BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – The Battle Creek Police Department is warning residents to be on high alert when answering calls from unknown numbers.

A number of people have reported an individual calling people are telling them their power will be shut off if they do not put a certain amount of money on a gift card and mail them.

The caller then asks for the gift card numbers for verification, according to an alert by the police department, which allows them to use the card without even receiving it.

Battle Creek police are reminding residents that Consumers Energy does not make these types of requests and that it is a scam.

Police say if you receive a call like this to either hang up or to reach out to Consumers Energy directly.
