Muskegon woman seriously injured in Merritt Speedway crash

MISSAUKEE COUNTY, Mich. — A Muskegon woman was seriously injured in a terrifying crash at a race track this weekend.

The crash happened Sunday night at the Merrit Speedway in Missaukee County.  One of the race cars on the track had an accelerator pedal stick, causing it to spin out and crash through a nearby fence and hit three people.

One of those people was Jennifer Johnson Kiel of Muskegon.   FOX 17 spoke to her sister Monday night, who said Kiel was trapped in a nearby ticket booth for several minutes after the crash before first responders could get to her.

She was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital and underwent surgery Monday for pelvis and rib fractures.

The other two people who were injured were workers at the speedway.  They have been treated and released.  The race car driver was also okay after the crash.
