GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Students at a Kent County middle school and a high school will get an extra day of summer vacation Tuesday due to damage from a storm earlier this summer.
Kenowa Hills Middle and High School will open on Wednesday, September 7, instead of Tuesday, September 6. The school sent out a GRAIL message regarding the closing Monday and posted a link to the explanation on Facebook.
The district says that the delay was caused by hail damage that caused leaks in the roofs. The leaks have been repaired, but a full roof replacement is expected to be needed for next summer. Classrooms had to be cleaned and air quality samples were taken to make sure rooms were safe for occupancy. Teachers had not had time to set up their classrooms for the school year.
All other schools in the district will open on Tuesday.
