Celebration! Cinema announces addition of captioning devices at theaters

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Celebration! Cinemas announced Thursday that all of its locations will soon be equipped with devices to help the hearing-impaired enjoy a film.

The theater chain said in a press release that all of its locations will have the equipment by mid-October.  The theaters will be equipped with closed captioning devices, descriptive audio and an upgrade to assistive listening.

A St. Joseph resident filed a lawsuit, along with the National Association of the Deaf, against the chain in August that the Benton Harbor location did not provide captioning devices which are available in most other areas.  The suit claims that the devices are required as part of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Celebration! Cinema already had the devices in Grand Rapids and Lansing theaters.  Today’s announcement says the devices will be in all their theaters in mid-October.  The locations include:

  • Benton Harbor
  • All Grand Rapids locations
  • Mt. Pleasant
  • Muskegon
  • Portage
