14 dogs die when air conditioning fails in truck at Indiana dog show

ROSELAND, Ind. – 14 dogs died in a hot vehicle over the weekend, according to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County (IN).

Officers with the humane society say they were called by St. Joseph County police to the Quality Inn on Dixie Highway in Roseland, Indiana on Friday.  14 dogs were found dead in a vehicle where a power failure had shut off the cooling system to the area where the dogs were being housed.

According to the South Bend Tribune, the dogs were in town for an American Kennel Club dog show at the St. Joseph County Fairgrounds and all but one of the dogs were golden retrievers.

According to the paper, the truck that the dogs were in had an air conditioned cargo area and the truck was plugged in to an outlet on the hotel’s wall.  Sometime Friday afternoon, a circuit breaker tripped, cutting power to the air conditioner. It is not known what caused the trip.
