LOWELL TWP., Mich. - One person is in custody after a chase along some rural roads of Kent County.
Michigan State Police say the incident started just after 6:30am near the East Beltline and Cascade Road. A trooper pulled over a blue pickup truck and found that it had been reported stolen from Montcalm County. The 19-year-old male driver then assaulted the trooper and sped off.
Police were able to follow the truck down some back roads in the area. Police say the driver tried to drive through a field and get onto I-96 without using an entrance ramp. There, he was stopped by Kent County deputies and taken into custody.
The chase lasted about 20-30 minutes. The trooper who was assaulted suffered minor facial injuries.
A 16-year-old girl was a passenger in the truck. She is also in custody.
The scene on I-96 is cleared and traffic is moving through the area normally.
