July starts with needed rainfall

Posted

WEST MICHIGAN — Showers and thunderstorms — some with locally heavy rainfall — moved across the FOX 17 viewing area quickly this morning while most people slept. Between 2:00 and 4:00 AM is when most of the rain fell, and it fell ahead of a cold front that is the leading edge of another dry stretch of weather coming to the area for the long weekend. Here is a look at some rainfall totals from across the area:

Since the 0.29″ of rain that fell in Grand Rapids occurred after midnight, this entire rainfall event will go in the books for July 2016. June of 2016 was very dry across most of West Michigan, and especially in Grand Rapids:

The lack of rainfall was enough to put us on a top-10 list (although just barely) in G.R.:

The overall dry pattern is expected to continue through the 4th of July weekend and into most of next week. There will be an area of low pressure moving across the Ohio River valley on Monday and Tuesday, but it looks like the rain will stay to the south of us with this system. Our next opportunity for rainfall comes on Thursday as an upper level disturbance moves in from the northwest. This could bring some welcome rainfall in the form of showers and storms.
