Confessed killer of woman near GRCC campus to have mental competency exam

Posted

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The confessed killer of Jeanne Huntoon, 34, was back in court Tuesday for only minutes until his attorney called for a mental competency exam.

Marcus Bivins, 19, confessed to FOX 17 May 11 in a jailhouse interview and stated he stabbed and beat Huntoon to death April 30 when his "mind clicked over," and blamed his actions on mental illness. The two did not know each other and Grand Rapids Police Department Sgt. Terry Dixon called the killing "random."

In court for his preliminary hearing Tuesday, Bivins' Defense Attorney John Grace adjourned the hearing calling for a mental competency exam. Huntoon's mother Debbie told FOX 17 this is a delay in justice, clearly upset with the delay in her daughter's murder case.

Police identified Bivins in Grand Rapids Community College parking garage surveillance video recorded April 30: Bivins can be seen dragging Huntoon's body on the sidewalk after he told police he stabbed and beat her to death.

While mental competency exams are not uncommon, the process can take several weeks up to months. There is no court date set yet for Bivins.
