PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- An 86-year-old Port St. Lucie man had a cup of coffee and called his daughters before dialing 911 to say he shot his wife to death, authorities said.
Police say when they arrived at William Hager's home, they expected a standoff. Instead, he told responding officers that he had bad news and led them straight to his wife Carolyn's body, which was lying on the bed with a gunshot wound to her head, according to WPTV.
Hager told authorities he shot her because she was in very poor health and he could no longer pay for her medication.
According to the arrest affidavit obtained by local media in Florida, Hager had confessed that he considered shooting his 78-year-old wife for several days because her pain was too severe.
Hager now faces a charge of first degree murder.
