GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A firefighter was injured and five residents managed to escape from a fire in the Heritage Hill neighborhood of Grand Rapids early Tuesday morning.
It happened at around 3:20 a.m. at a home located at 16 Portsmouth Place NE, just north of Fulton Street. When crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from the building. As they circled around to the back of the home, two residents and a dog were on the roof of the carport. Firefighters were able to rescue them. Three other residents made it out safely, but a cat did not survive.
Over the course of the response, a firefighter suffered an injury to his arm. He is expected to be okay.
It is not clear what started the fire.
