FLINT, Mich. (AP) — A Flint-area official says a new water pipeline to Lake Huron should be completed by June or July.

The Genesee County drain commissioner says Flint will save millions of dollars when it connects to the Karegnondi Water Authority, which will be serving many communities.

Jeff Wright spoke Friday at a meeting of a group created to help Flint recover from lead-contaminated water.

Flint won’t start drawing water from the new pipeline until its water treatment plant passes tests.

While under state management, Flint in 2014 began using the Flint River but didn’t treat the water for corrosion. As a result, lead leached from old pipes for 18 months. Flint switched back to a Detroit-area water system last fall but the lead problem still isn’t fully solved.
