Attorney: Judge OKs settlement to estate of Muskegon inmate who died

MUSKEGON, Mich. (AP) — An attorney says a judge has approved a $1.55 million settlement from Muskegon County to the estate of an inmate who died.

Dahnontae McKinley, who was housed in the Muskegon County Jail, died in 2012 after authorities said he tried to escape from his cell. The Muskegon Chronicle reports he struggled with guards and was restrained in a chair.

Stephen Drew, an attorney for the McKinley estate, says a judge approved a $1.55 million settlement earlier this month.

Muskegon County Attorney Doug Hughes says the settlement was a “business decision” by the insurance carrier for the county. He says the officers “did nothing wrong and did not admit to doing anything wrong.”
