Officers hit by suspected drunk driver expected to return to work this week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. —Two officers hit by a suspected drunk driver over the weekendare expected to return to work this week.

On Monday, the Grand Rapids Police Department identified Chad VanDam, 25 and Caleb Johnson 31, as the officers injured in a crash over the weekend.

It happened on Saturday just before 2:30 a.m. in the 600 block of Madison SE in Grand Rapids. Police said the two officers were injured when a Chevy Malibu driven by a Grand Rapids resident rear ended their patrol car. Both men were taken to Spectrum Health for treatment and released a few hours later.

Police believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash and the driver was arrested.
