Driver dies after rollover crash on U.S. 131 in Portage

PORTAGE, Mich. — A Ravenna man who was seriously injured in a Saturday morning crash on U.S. 131 has died.

At 9:31 a.m. Saturday, the Portage Department of Public Safety responded to a report of an accident with injuries on U.S. 131 south of Centre Street.  Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that a 2001 Ford pickup truck had been traveling southbound on 131 when it left the highway and then rolled over multiple times into a wooded area on the freeway’s west side.

The truck’s driver and its lone occupant, 57-year-old Harry Eschman of Ravenna, was transported to Bronson Hospital where he was listed in critical condition. Late Saturday afternoon, police announced  that Eschman had died at Bronson.

Police also said “It is unknown at this time whether an underlying medical condition factored into this accident.”

The cause of the accident remains under investigation. Police said an autopsy has been ordered.
