Detroit 22-year-old shot in face at Portage banquet hall

PORTAGE, Mich. — A Detroit man was seriously injured after being shot in the face and another Detroit man was taken into custody during a gathering at a banquet hall early Sunday morning.

At the time, Portage police were already on the lookout for an armed robbery suspect with a warrant out for his arrest from the city of Detroit. Detroit police had contacted Portage Public Safety and told them that the man was expected to be at The Renaissance nightclub on Saturday evening with the Shredgang rap group.

The Renaissance is an event center and banquet hall located at 3750 E. Kilgore Road.

Shortly after midnight, at 12:44 a.m. Sunday, Portage police received a report of shots fired from a person at The Renaissance.  The caller also told police that a person was down inside the business.

Public Safety officers responded to the scene and found a 22-year-old Detroit man who was also a member of the Shredgang group had received a single gunshot wound to the face. He was transported in a personal vehicle to Bronson Hospital where he was listed in serious condition later Sunday.

The suspect with the warrant from the Detroit Police Department was arrested for the warrant.

The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Department and Michigan State Police assisted the Portage Department of Public Safety at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation by Portage Public Safety.
