KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says a 17-year-old Phoenix High School student was in possession of a gun on school grounds Wednesday.
According to a release, the handgun was recovered after the student discarded it during a foot chase with police.
School officials contacted police at about 10:09 a.m. because the student was allegedly refusing to leave school grounds.
According to a release, the student was leaving the school when police arrived at the scene, but the officer was told by a school security officer that the student appeared to have something in his waistband.
The Kalamazoo officer approached the student, who reportedly fled. He was eventually taken into custody several blocks from the school, police said in a release.
No injuries were reported in the incident. The student’s name was not released.
