GRAND RAPIDS, Mich -- Skunks are most active from February into early March. Although a warm day like the one we had Sunday can get them moving, they're really on the move because they're looking for a mate.
Animal control experts say this is their prime mating season. Critter Control of Grand Rapids says they respond to about a dozen calls per week for nuisance skunks on homeowners' properties.
Some area fire departments also get calls when a skunk leaves their odor near a furnace intake. In this situation, they say a skunk's odor can be confused with a toxic burning smell. But even if you do make that mistake, they say it's better to call them than to risk a possible fire getting out of control.
