COLOMA TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A 30-year-old Benton Harbor man is in custody in connection to a suspicious death of an 8-month-old Hartford boy, according to authorities in Berrien County.

Police said the 30-year-old man was watching the baby in Coloma at the time of the incident.

The baby was taken to Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph by a relative on Friday afternoon where he died. Officials with the hospital then alerted authorities to the suspicious nature of the death, according to Chief Jason Roe with the Coloma Twp. Police Department.

Roe would not say how the baby died.

The suspect is being lodged at the Berrien County Jail on felony murder and first degree child abuse charges. His name is being withheld pending formal charges being filed by the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office.

Roe said he anticipates releasing additional information following the suspect’s arraignment Monday afternoon.
