GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – A new program announced Tuesday will help Grand Rapids Public School students to have access to playing sports.
GRPS and the Student Advancement Foundation implemented the GR8 Sports, Great Kids program today. The program is the ensure students K-8th grade access to sports, regardless of the ability to pay to play.
The group says that most districts do not provide elementary sports programs and require students to “pay to play.” For many in Grand Rapids, that hasn’t been an option.
The program is combining both district funds and private donations to offer athletics for students. Some private companies and foundations already onboard include Meijer, Spectrum Health, the Doug and Maria DeVos Foundation, the CDV Foundation, Dean Transportation, the Cook Foundation, the Jandernoa Foundation and the West Michigan Spartans.
